INSTALLING KINGS QUEST 3 ON A HARD DRIVE This is simply a rehash of the instructions included with the KQ3 package on how to install the game on a hard drive, with some additional tips from myself and others. 1. Create a subdirectory on your hard disk for the game. I called mine /dd/GAMES/QUEST, but call it whatever you want. 2. Within this new directory, create a CMDS subdirectory. 3. Copy all of the files from the CMDS directory of disk 1, side 1 of the KQ3 distribution disks to the new CMDS directory you just created on the hard drive in step 2. 4. Copy the following files from the root directory of disk 1, side 1 to the subdirectory on the hard drive you created in step 1: logDir, picDir, sndDir, viewDir, words.toc 5. Copy the file 'object' from any of the KQ3 distribution disks to the subdirectory created in step 1. 6. Copy all of the 'vol.#' files from each of the KQ3 distribution disks to the subdirectory on the hard drive created in step 1. Remember to copy the files on side 2 of each distribution disk. Some files, such as 'vol.0', are on more than one distribution disk. Only copy these files once to your hard drive. 7. Create a text file in the directory created in step 1 called 'tOC.txt'. This file should contain the following text exactly as it appears here: d1 s1 v0 v1 d1 s1 v0 v2 v3 v4 v5 v6 v12 v14 d1 s1 v0 v7 v8 v9 v11 8. Create a new 'tOC' file using the TOCGen utility from the CMDS directory on distribution disk 1. Load that utility into memory, then make sure the current data directory is the directory you created in step 1, which should now contain the 'toc.txt' file you created in step 7. At an OS9: prompt, type "TOCGen tOC.txt". 9. If you are using OS-9 Level II (as opposed to NitrOS-9), then in the MODULES directory of disk 1, side 1, there are three modules: CLOCK, AGIVIRQDr, and VI. These modules must be in the OS9Boot file for the game to function correctly. Add them using OS9GEN, KWIKGEN, EZGEN, or whatever. 10. If you are using NitrOS-9, then you will need to add the modules VRN and VI to your OS9Boot file. These files can be found on the RTSI site and also the Sourceforge NitrOS-9 distribution disk. 11. For NitrOS-9 RGB-DOS or HDB-DOS users with a SCSI hard drive, I have also included on my website a disk image of my NitrOS-9 boot disk which contains my OS9Boot file with VRN and VI included. Download this file, copy it to a real 5 1/4" disk, and then copy it to Drive 255 of your RGB-DOS or HDB-DOS partition. Then type 'DOS255' to boot NitrOS-9 with the modules you need to run KQ3. 12. At the OS9: prompt, type the following commands: CHX [the directory created in step 2] CHD [the directory created in step 1] SIERRA My website address is: FredProv5.bravepages.com/Coco.html If you can't find the disk image on my site, check back periodically. It might take me a little while to put it up. My OS9Boot file includes the following modules: OS9p2 OS9p3 Init IOMan Clock RBF CC3Disk D0 D1 SCSISYS dd h0 SCF VDGInt CC3IO WindInt W W1 W2 W3 PipeMan Piper Pipe VRN VI FTDD FT W10 W11 W12 W13 W14 W15 13. Once the game starts running, hit CTRL-V to toggle between RGB and CMP mode. So is this as clear as mud? I hope not. If you have a problem, send me an email.
